Job Description for Land Surveyor

If you are a person who enjoys problem solving and working in teams, then land surveying is the job for you. Land surveyors are involved in measuring properties and land to determine the boundaries. Doing this helps to determine where buildings and roads can be created. Land surveyors begin their work by doing research about the assignment they have been given. This includes finding information about previous surveys and boundary lines, and gathering information by going to the field. Land surveyors also get to use the Global Positioning System equipment in order to gather the most accurate information. Land surveyors assist in the preparation of land development plans and correspondence, maintain and store drawing files for active projects, and perform construction stake-out and boundary surveys. Land surveyors also perform field surveys to obtain data for base plans and produce drawings from raw survey data through the finished product. Once the land survey is complete, the surveyor records his or her findings and creates an official report and map. Sometimes a land surveyor will be required to present his or her findings to an individual or company to have him or her do the survey. This is a very physical job and can take place in many locations and climates, and sometimes may even require one to travel away from one's home for an extended period of time. Land surveyors will be required to bring all of their equipment to each location. These workers need to have a great understanding of mathematical and computer skills. The job requires a bachelor's degree in a surveying program. This is a job that can take one to many new and exciting places.
