Job Description for Maid or Housekeeping Cleaner

A maid or housekeeper is a necessary and often underappreciated job that nevertheless requires physical and mental skill. Maids must be able to clean rooms or houses on a daily basis and must be physically capable of being on their feet for long periods of time as well as being physically active doing such routine cleaning chores as vacuuming, washing dishes, and dusting. The maid must be able to take direction from their employers and understand which rooms to deep-clean, what other tasks need to be completed, etc. A maid can also typically expect to disinfect and wash beds, trash cans, and kitchen counters.
A maid’s work may involve both indoor and outdoor areas, depending upon the layout of the house and the wishes of the employers. They must be comfortable using tools such as a vacuum cleaner, duster, and mop. Maids may be self-employed or work for a general cleaning company. In either case, the main boss is the household to which the maid is sent to complete his or her work. Maids must be professional and comfortable interacting with different people. In some cases, this may involve casual conversation with their employer or, in some cases, the utmost discretion. No education or certifications are required. A typical workday may vary drastically, depending on how large the house is that needs to be cleaned as well as what time of day it needs to be done. In any case, the maid must be able to fit the employer’s needs into his or her own schedule.
