Job Description for Medical and Public Health Social Worker

Most of the time, medical and public health social workers work for government agencies. They must be concerned with the general well-being of communities. Social workers in this field might deal with communities of different sizes. They can work for cities, small towns, states, or the federal government. They must make sure that that the community they serve has adequate health information. They make sure that the entire community has necessary tools to make informed health decisions. They must have thorough knowledge in scientific, social, and health issues.

They must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in social science, health, or other relevant fields. They must make informed decisions about keeping the community healthy. They must monitor clients that are within government programs. They must keep track of clients’ health and conditions. They must generate progress reports to be submitted to their managers or relevant parties. Medical and public health social workers who work with general communities may have to interview community members, analyze relevant statistics, and interview community leaders to solve medical and public health issues.

They must have interpersonal and customer service skills. They must have written and oral communications skills. They must be comfortable when dealing with public. They may be required to give speeches or presentations at various public events. They must be dedicated and ethical. They must read various journals relevant to their job. They may have to coach or mentor new medical and public health social workers.

Medical and Public Health Social Worker Tasks
  • Assess and treat patients and their families in understanding and coping with emotional and social problems.
  • Provide advocacy and resource services for the patient.
  • Maintain caseload, documentation and reevaluate patients at appropriate intervals.
  • Gather relevant information pertaining to case issues.
  • Facilitate education, support groups and referrals.
