Job Description for Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies and they primarily assist the pharmacist with whom they work. They help ensure that the pharmacy is running efficiently and is staying organized. Some of the duties of a technician include taking inventory, answering the phone, collecting patient information for insurance billing, restocking and ordering necessary supplies, and performing other administrative tasks.
Pharmacy technicians measure and count medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians must be precise in everything they do and they must pay a great deal of attention to detail. They screen the prescriptions being turned in and they must confirm that a physician has filled everything out correctly before filling a given prescription.
A pharmacy technician also speaks with drug representatives to stay on top of the new studies and drugs that have been approved. The daily duties are plentiful with shipments/orders coming into the pharmacy and prescriptions needing to be accurately filled, mailed out and refilled. Many pharmacies are open all day so the shifts can vary. To become a pharmacy technician, some pharmacies prefer training from an accredited school. However, it is not always required; most times all that is need is a High School Diploma or a G.E.D. The technician then learns as they go, gaining more knowledge as times goes by as well as experience.
