Job Description for Policy Analyst

Policy analysts help to develop policies for the government, as well as give advice to ministers and senior management. They evaluate, research, and consult stakeholders before giving their best advice to the government. Policy analysts review, evaluate, and monitor policies and legislation; they also formulate policy reports that synthesize information and display quantitative and qualitative evidence.

The majority of a policy analyst's time is spent reading, writing, and analyzing information. They should able to learn the policy cycle and the system of government at a fast pace. They must always stay loyal to the government and they must always go along with government policies. They must also effectively analyze any issues raised by the public and make sure the government is adequately prepared to handle the situation.

Policy analysts need to be skilled at problem solving, establishing pros and cons of a particular policy option, and able to choose an option that is the best fit for the government or client. Policy analysts are typically required to have a bachelor's degree in fields such as social studies, history, law, economics, public policy, social policy, or political science.
Policy Analyst Tasks
  • Gather, analyze, integrate, and report on quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Formulate policy reports that synthesize information, benefit constituents, and display evidence.
  • Review, evaluate, and monitor policies and legislation to determine their benefits, flaws, and impacts.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to understand and document needs, concerns, and viewpoints.
