Job Description for Printing Machine Operator

A printing machine operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a printing machine. The position requires only a high school diploma or GED, though some companies prefer or require experience with their particular machine or software. The ability to read in English and to distinguish between colors is essential, as is careful attention to detail. Also, the job may infrequently require lifting up to 70 lbs. and lesser weights more regularly. A printing machine operator will process and print documents on the printer and will often be responsible for maintaining production and quality by inspecting random production samples and producing system quality check reports. The operator will interpret pre-printing instructions for the task and sort materials and printing jobs to best serve customer needs. Maintenance is also the operator's responsibility; this includes changing over jobs by removing ink and paper, cleaning parts and components, installing toner, paper, and other parts, and other preventative maintenance duties. The printing machine operator will troubleshoot stoppages and breakdowns in order to minimize downtime. Other duties include maintaining press supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level and packing the finished product. A printing machine operator may work for a printing company or for an organization whose printing needs require an operator. The job requires frequent bending and lifting.
