Job Description for Private Equity Fund Manager

Private equity fund managers work primarily for financial institutions and are responsible for managing investments for investors. They must thoroughly understand their clients’ financial situations and goals and are required to pass series 6's (66, 63, and 65) and 7 exams as administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Some employers also require their private equity fund managers to have appropriate state life insurance licenses and/or professional designation of Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

Private equity fund managers must follow all Security Exchange Commission (SEC) rules and regulations at all times and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules and regulations, as well as the Department of Labor's Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).

Leadership, interpersonal skills, and computer skills are important in this position, and a bachelor's degree or higher in business, finance, marketing, or a related field is generally required. Private equity fund managers must also work well with clients' databases, financial analysis software, Microsoft Office programs, and their organizations' computer systems. They must dress appropriately, as they are often required to meet their clients face-to-face, and must always keep their licenses up-to-date.
