What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

"Red RAG status does not mean you are failing."
A Red RAG status on your project does not mean you are doing a bad job. So long as you know what the risks/issues are on your project and you are dealing with these, and you are communicating to all necessary parties, your project is being controlled. Communication is key! Stakeholders only get difficult if they are not being kept informed or they get a surprise. If you captured your risks, there will be little surprise.

The status of your project is less important than the communication of it. A red RAG status does not mean you are failing, so long as you know where the issues are and have mitigating actions in place. Above all, as long as key stakeholders are aware, you are in control and doing a good job!

In a SME, don't expect any two days to be the same. Some weeks are well planned but adhoc requests come in which have conflicting priorities. After a while you get used to working in this environment and actually miss it now that I'm working for a FTSE 100 company where you're paid to do just your job, with very little variety.
