The Project Manager of Software Development is a position in high demand in today's technical world. Virtually every business nowadays makes use of computers and networking systems. Whether the company has a software division of their own or they use purchased software, the Project Manager of Software Development has plenty to do with his or her day-to-day business.
Project Managers of Software Development can be found in many areas of industry. They may work for an actual software company that develops programs for Apple or Microsoft, for example. They may also work for companies that do not deal in software but make use of their own software. Many retailers and offices make use of Project Managers of Software Development in this capacity. This position works primarily as the head of a team of software engineers. They are constantly working to develop new software which is either a completely new technical idea or an improvement over a previous one. Any business that has anything to do with developing software generally produces a new version of its primary product on a yearly basis, as well as updates during the year, as needed. Project Managers of Software Development must have a high degree of understanding with all aspects of computer systems. They must also possess great leadership abilities in order to be able to preside over a team of highly intelligent minds. The working environment for this job is typically indoors in an office and in meeting rooms. As they are in a position of seniority, Project Managers of Software Development may have more flexible hours than a software engineer. They would usually work regular office hours anywhere between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. A typical shift might take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The education and experience required for this position is rather extensive. A bachelor's degree in computer science is the most common requirement. Several years of experience in software development is also generally required. Project Managers of Software Development must also have extensive knowledge of many computer programming languages as well as knowledge of how computer networks operate.
The Project Manager of Software Development is a position that affects everyone in the developed or developing world. Nearly everything one can think of makes use of computer and computer systems today. The Project Manager of Software Development is responsible for all of these systems working functionally and properly, as well as improving them.
Project Manager, Software Development Tasks
  • Coordinate delivery of development (beta) and production releases that meet quality assurance standards.
  • Assist test team in creating test plans and testing efforts.
  • Create and maintain a information technology project plan that communicates tasks, milestone dates, status and resource allocation.
  • Assist technical team in design and development tasks.
  • Utilize software life-cycle methodology.
