Job Description for Research Analyst, Financial

A financial research analyst works within a large business or financial services company to provide guidance on investing and portfolio management; they do this by gathering and interpreting financial data. The analyst typically works with other financial professionals and provides information and opinions to a senior financial analyst or advisor, who then uses the analyst's input to help make investment decisions with company capital.

Financial research analysts typically study data related to market trends such as transaction volume and general market traffic. They study which institutions are instigating activity and attempt to predict short- and long-term responses within trade markets. Financial research analysts must be able to reinforce their opinions with data with multiple sources, and they must also help project how current financial and regulatory trends may affect the markets in which his or her employer is engaged.

A finance or business research-oriented bachelor's degree is typically required for this position, and financial research analysts may also have a master's degree. Previous experience - including a track record of successful financial research analysis - is needed as well. Financial research analysts need to be able to categorize and prioritize large amounts of information based on their value and applicability. They must be detail-oriented, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be willing to work long hours in an office environment.
