Job Description for Retail Store Assistant Manager

The assistant manager for a retail store helps the manager oversee the daily retail operations and store staff, handle employee schedules, and to monitor and prioritize the workflow. The assistant manager will often work on the sales floor in addition to handling customer complaints escalated by store associates and working to resolve issues efficiently to ensure customer satisfaction. Assistant retail store managers assist in the selection, training, and development of current staff and new hires, and they work with store associates to ensure that monthly sales goals are met if not exceeded. The assistant manager will also help manage and stock inventory at specified levels.
No college degree is required to be an assistant manager for a retail store, but a high school diploma or GED is generally necessary as is experience working in retail or customer service, preferably in a supervisory role. Assistant managers need to have excellent time management skills, be punctual and find time to complete any and all assigned tasks in a given work day. They must also have good oral and written communication skills to ensure a good customer service experience, to help in the management of store associates, and enforce company policies. Math skills are helpful when it comes to totaling daily sales for the store, and ensuring that the register totals are on-target and no funds are unaccounted for.
Assistant retail store managers will often work mornings to help open the store and/or evenings as necessary to assist in closing the store for the day.
Retail Store Assistant Manager Tasks
  • Assist in overseeing the day-to-day retail operations and staff; monitor and prioritize workflow and schedules.
  • Manage and stock inventory at specified levels.
  • Sell the organization's products and/or services to new or established customers; handle and resolve escalated customer complaints and issues.
  • Assist in managing the selection, training and development of staff; ensure monthly sales quota are met.
