Job Description for Sales and Marketing Director

A sales and marketing director is responsible for the planning and implementing of sales, marketing and product development programs. Responsibilities include developing and managing sales and marketing budgets, creating strategic marketing plans, ensuring proper product positioning, packaging and pricing, and creating periodical sales reports. The goal of the sales and marketing director is to maintain a satisfactory profit-loss ratio, have control of marketing results, and create and maintain relationships with key strategic planners and industrial influences. As the market changes, the sales and marketing director needs to adjust strategies to keep up with trends and stay ahead of the competition.

This job requires constant attention to detail; even when sales and marketing programs run smoothly, changing consumer trends create a need for the entire marketing program to be revised and adjusted.

Sales and marketing directors works for a range of companies, generally retail or wholesale-based businesses. Education and experience requirements generally include a bachelor’s degree in sales, marketing, business, or a related field, as well as at least five years' business management experience. The sales and marketing director must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate the ability to solve complex problems, and have the ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
Sales and Marketing Director Tasks
  • Plan and set the marketing and sales direction and strategy.
  • Act as subject matter expert to senior leadership on issues relating to sales and marketing.
  • Oversee staff operations, business planning, budget development and expenditures toward achievement of objectives.
  • Oversee the competitive positioning of the organization; including the analysis and collection of market data.
  • Develop objectives and policies for the sales and marketing department, and measurements.
