Senior project engineers are people who have generally worked as project engineers for more than ten years. They lead teams of project engineers in planning, designing and implementing engineering as well as other industrial projects. They also improve processes by developing new methodologies, generate new ideas for potential projects, and identify, analyze and resolve problems in all phases of project development and execution.
Senior project engineers generally have a bachelor's degree in an occupational field related to the job position (such as the chemical, civil, computer, electrical and mechanical fields). Better employment opportunities await those who have obtained a professional engineering license such as the one granted by the National Society of Professional Engineers through the successful passing of a licensing. Most senior project engineers have a demonstrated knowledge and experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCADD or MicroStation. Good leadership and the ability to mentor and train junior engineers are also highly desirable traits.
Senior project engineers work out of an office at their company's location but they may have to travel frequently when projects are located at different sites. These travels may be short- or long-term. Travel requirements notwithstanding, senior project engineers keep a regular daytime schedule (8 - 5). Companies that employ senior project engineers are varied and many considering the vastness of the engineering industry. Examples of such companies are Caterpillar and Honeywell.
