The job of a sheet metal worker is a skilled trade position. This type of job requires an individual who can demonstrate the ability to construct various sheet metal objects to be used in residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Sheet metal is typically required in the construction of air conditioning and heating duct systems, siding, rain gutters, ventilation, metal roofing, automobiles, airplanes, locomotives, generators and numerous other projects. Sheet metal workers use a variety of hand and power tools to perform their jobs including lathes, torches, crimping machines, shears, punches, forming presses, hammers, grinders, breaks, edging machines, and drills in order to cut, smooth, and manipulate the metal into required shapes and pieces. Fastening sheet metal requires the use of solder, screws, bolts, and rivets. In addition, workers are often expected to be able to weld various types of metals.
Sheet metal workers must be able to read and interpret various drawing, templates, blueprints, and schematics for various jobs in order to create the required products. This is a hands-on job that requires the ability to lift heavy objects. Sheet metal workers can acquire jobs either in a shop or on a job site. Workers must be able to utilize their mathematical skills in developing layouts and patterns for required jobs. Workers will often need to be able to construct three-dimensional drawings for building information modeling. The ability to correctly follow directions and plans with a strong attention to detail is crucial to this position. There are various skill levels for this position varying from an apprentice to a journeyman.
