Know what you're worth
Pay negotiations are always difficult, we're brought thinking it's not polite to ask for money. But what you must realize is that no one else is going to ask for you. Your employer may get some research on what is the market rate for your job, or worse they may offer what they think they can get away with. It is important that you know what other jobs are offering, you can get this information from recruiters, and it is also important that you know, and are realistic, about how good you are at your job. If you are better than average, then you shouldn't be accepting the average salary.
