A senior information manager is a job that requires both mental and people skills. This person normally works in a large or medium-sized company. This type of manager is in charge of all forms of interoffice communications. This can include server, email, or teleconference functions that go on in the office. This position is generally going to require a four-year degree in some kind of technology or business field.
The senior information manager must work with all levels of staff and management and be able to supervise a team of lower-ranked information mangers. Since communication and information issues can happen at any time during the day, this person must be very flexible and be able to respond to situations that require immediate attention. The person must also have very good communication skills, including the ability to describe very complex information issues on a practical and understandable level. This job also requires great patience and the ability to slowly assist people that have limited knowledge of information systems and problems.
Another aspect of the job is that the senior information manager will have to work with and assist higher level executives in the company. These high level executives will have the same communication and information issues that the lowest employees have. The manager will need to be able to explain to them quickly and get the problem fixed immediately. The job does not normally require any certifications or upper level degrees. Experience is more preferred than higher level certifications.
