Job Description for Tax Accountant

A tax accountant's main job is to assist his or her clients with the preparation and filing of their taxes. He or she must be able to prepare tax returns and reports, maintain records, and analyze and research complex tax issues. A tax accountant must also analyze tax regulations, recommend policies that minimize tax burden, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. He or she must also provide support during tax audits. A tax accountant must be able to work closely and professionally with a number of different clients ranging from those who simply do not want to be bothered to do their own taxes to those who do not know how to do their own taxes. While many tax accountants work alone with their clients, in particularly difficult cases he or she may be required to work alongside additional accountants and/or associates.
The job of a tax account is done entirely indoors in an office building or similar setting. A tax account's job is not physically demanding, but it is very mentally challenging. It requires the inspection, understanding, and tracking of many different numbers and expenditures with no room for miscalculation or error. The education required for a tax account includes high school and college. In addition, many specific tax accounting firms require certifications and testing to prove competency in the accounting process. The hours and schedule of a tax accountant are routine and typically follow a standard business work week of eight hours a day, five days a week.
