Job Description for Wind Turbine Technician

Since many large corporations and small venture companies are focusing on renewable energy sources, wind turbine technicians have a great work outlook for the coming years. They identify, inspect, maintain, and repair wind turbines for quality control. Their goal is to keep maintenance costs low and quality high. Wind turbine technicians assist with the installation of new systems and keep proper documentation of all repairs.

Working with a site supervisor and a team of subcontractors, they must have an understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. A college degree is not necessary, but wind turbine technicians must have a high school diploma. Previous work experience in a related field is helpful. They should be able to analyze reports and instructions, perform basic math skills, and communicate effectively with supervisors and other team members. Some confidential information must be protected, and integrity is of utmost importance in this field.

The work is physically demanding so wind turbine technicians must be in great health. They frequently stand, walk, lift, and climb to extreme heights. The noise level can be high, and entry into this career requires a clinical assessment and wind turbine climb test. Wind turbine technicians often travel to various locations and work long hours and weekends so a flexible schedule is necessary. Candidates must not be afraid of heights or confined spaces. They need to follow all safety guidelines and attend regular training courses. There is plenty of room for advancement in the area of wind energy, and successful employees can move up the career ladder very quickly.
