Non profits = low pay, great benefits
Employment, Recruitment, or Placement Specialist / Recruiter - (City withheld for privacy), Connecticut, United States
If you are thinking of joining a not for profit organization in a career change, know one thing. You will not be paid what you feel you are worth unless you land in an executive level job. Those types are generally OVER paid. But, there are a lot of wonderful perks/benefits. Shorter work week (generally 35 hours full time) lots of paid time off and good medical benefits.

The money stinks but the work is rewarding and the benefits can't be beat!

Working more and being paid less.
Retail Sales Associate - (City withheld for privacy), South Carolina, United States
I have been working at Homedepot in Lancaster, SC since the day it first opened. I have been working there longer than any new associate in that store. I worked in what is called special order services. I sell carpet and all other flooring needs. I was the deptartment manager for 2.50 yrs, I've always been the top seller in my department ever quarter, every year. I've always had the most customer surveys, with the highest marks for the best customer comments, but yet I am under paid for my service.

Work LIfe Balance
Retail Store Manager - (City withheld for privacy), Wisconsin, United States
I love what I do, but I have no other life. Doctors have more of a life than someone in retail. No holidays, no funerals, no family time. Malls are open too long. In that past consumers found a way to shop in the structured time that was set and businesses prospered more than they do now. It would be great if we went back to Sunday closed.

Companies want to make more money on less hours for floor coverage, but want Legendary Customer Service. I love to train, but have found that companies talk the talk about training but do not walk the walk. I feel that I never get to fully train and teach assoicates to sell from their hearts and have passion.

Never say.
Sales Associate - (City withheld for privacy), Georgia, United States
Keep yourself as versitle as you can. Complaining is not an option. Always remember nobody is irreplacable. There is always someone better or who will do it for less. Make your employer want to keep you and pay you to stay. Being versitle keeps you learning and it helps the BOSS know you want the job. The "complaint department" will never be open. Unless you have serious and sound problems, keep your mouth shut. Pettiness is just that, pettiness. Pay attention to dress codes and all procedures, one mistake could cost your job. Helping everyone in every department gives you leverage for pay increases and a sense of security. Job security is hard to come by. Make yourself available anytime & anyday. And the security will follow.

Balance is important to success
Marketing Director - (City withheld for privacy), Florida, United States
As a Director of Marketing AND the mother of 3 boys it hasn't always been easy to balance both. I am responsible for managing marketing and our reservations department, so I have to be in the office more than other marketing positions. Once the departments were running smoothly I spoke with our CEO about working from home at least one day a week on a trial basis to see if my job improved or suffered. I can complete the same amount of work from home (often more without the office distractions) and get laundry and simple household chores completed on my breaks away from the phone and computer. I now have more quality time to spend with my boys in the evenings and I feel less rushed. With the current technology a large percentage of jobs can now be performed from home. Ultimately I am completing more work because I can focus on the projects at hand without interruptions and I am a much happier employee.

Locating Job Opportunities
Retail Store Manager - (City withheld for privacy), Connecticut, United States
I found the job I have recently been acepted to by posting my resume on the internet.

A. Use a site dedicated to your profesion

B. Have a concise single page resume keep it simple and keep it honest.

C. Follow up. Keep in contact with the person with hire authority.

D. Do not get discouraged. It is a difernt process than it was 10 years ago. in order to secure the job, I had to complete an extensive interview, complete a test online, and complete a urinalysis. The total time is 3 weeks. (It was easier to join the military).

E. Do not settle. I researched the company extesively and talked to several people at the level that I was applying for. I comited only when I knew that my needs would be met.

If I settled with My current employer I would never be able to achieve my goals. personal or profesional.
