FAQs on Salaries for a Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree

Doctor of Medicine (MD) Salaries

Earning a Doctor of Medicine degree is just one step in the path to a medical career. Becoming a doctor takes years of schooling and residency. Formal education and training requirements for physicians are among the most demanding of any occupation. The requirements are four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, and three to eight years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. Completing an MD degree leads to many career options. Specialized fields include obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry, anesthesiology and many more. Acceptance to medical school is highly competitive and costly. Given the strenuous education and training requirements for physicians, what makes someone want to become a doctor? Is it the desire to help patients or the fact that physician salaries tend to be high? Whatever the reason, the path to becoming a doctor will be both challenging and rewarding.

MD Salary Data

How much do doctors make? A doctor’s salary varies depending on his or her specialized field. For example, researching MD Salaries by Job Title shows that an anesthesiologist can make twice as much as a general pediatrician. Experience is also an important factor affecting physician salaries. Measuring Doctor of Medicine Salaries by Years Experience shows that earning an MD degree is only the starting point to a potentially long and lucrative career; while median physician salaries start out relatively high, just a few years of experience can provide a significant boost to a doctor's salary.
