Tell The Truth -- Be Professional, But Don't Compromise
Mental Health Clinician - New Jersey, United States
The company for which I worked was bought by a larger national company. The new vision and methods of the company were in drastic contrast to my professional training and personal beliefs. Although my position was reguired by licensing mandates, my colleagues and I were marginalized and intimidated with threats.

My supervisor, from the former adminstration, was asked to leave shortly after the "takeover".

Things got worse, but I attempted to work within the company policies to address the inappropriate methods used by the new staff. Apparently I became a threat to the profit ventures of the company. I was told that I must resign or be immediately terminated. If I resigned I would be given severence and paid for my accrued vacation time.

I was hastily given a mandate to submit a letter of resignation. I believed that I was in a quandry as to how to report the nature of my departure from this company and still preserve my unemployment benefits. Although I am sure that the administrator endeavored to discourage me from applying for these benefits, in my resignation letter, I detailed everything that was said to me in the conversation leading to my forced resignation.

As of one month after leaving the company, the state unemployment office has not yet awarded unemployment benefits due to the possibility that I may have been terminated "due to misconduct."

It seems to me that if I had been severed due to misconduct, the company, under no circumstances, would have given me serverence or vacation pay; which I was finally given in full. I think now that I will be eligible for unemployment benefits.

If I had been intimidated to saying in the resignation letter what the company wanted me to say, it seems that I would not have had any grounds appeal any negative outcome of a benefits hearing. However, I told the truth and did not try to be vindictive or malicious. I think everything will work out.

Illness
Mental Health Counselor - (City withheld for privacy), New Jersey, United States
I developed a serious health condition and was told "ONE MORE INCIDENT AND YOU'RE OUT". Instead of letting this happen I calmly explained the situation and asked to resign which was accepted. I am sorry it had to happen but it was fair. Fortunatly, I did not need the job but would have preferred a more positive ending.

SCREWED
Social Worker - (City withheld for privacy), Ohio, United States
I was fired for being honest, maintaing integrity and ethics in my practice as a social worker. I was fired because I attended Case Western Reserve's Mandel School where others similarly situated were jealous of the educational excellence at Case. I was fired because I advocated for myself and spoke out against injustice.

When Working Around Inferior Qualified People Watch Your Injured Back!
Top Human Resources Officer - (City withheld for privacy), Pennsylvania, United States
While I was working for a Public Health Department, I was injured doing the job of several lazy nurses who refused to get their hands dirty cleaning up their own storage area. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished, so I destroyed multiple disks in a freak accident. This was just the chance the nurses and a new Health Officer, a female doctor, who was very green and very unqualified for the position went to work.

Every decision they could find that they failed to agree with, they blamed on me, even though all decisions of that level had to be made by the former Health Officer. They made up false problems that were clarified explained, and authorized in previous grant materials. And, probably the biggest lie of all, was to accuse me of not spending over $193,000; which was the direct responsibility of the Board of Health, as a mere Administrator, the position I held, could only spend $500 without authorization.

So while I was pumped full of narcotic drugs at successively higher levels waiting on surgery that eventually failed, they assembled all this manufactured information, held a "kangaroo court" in may absence an summarily fired me from my position while out on Worker's Comp, knowing full well I could not articulate a complete sentence, let alone defend my actions from false accusations.

The thing that I learned, a tough lesson as I look back upon it now, is hire an attorney to look out for your best interests if you suspect subterfuge may happen in your absence. If you do not trust you superiors or subordinates, never trust them when you are not in a position to take action to defend yourself. As its been said many, many times - you can rarely if ever, trust anyone in today's workplace, especially under qualified or incompetent supposed professional staffers, such as nurses and doctors or the female persuasion. The wield very sharp knives and like nothing better than to stab male professionals in the back with manufactured truths. Since the job wasn't worth what it paid, and I ended up permanently disabled, it just wasn't worth fighting for in my situation... but yours may be totally different. So get a lawyer to watch your back. You may recover where I did not. Good luck, and never ever trust a female doctor in a low paying position.

Getting Fired
Child, Family, or School Social Worker - (City withheld for privacy), California, United States
I was fired as Case Manager from a social services provider in may of 06. I have been sending out numourous resumes and applications, to no avail. Any who, I was fired because I left work. I was out of work and given a doctors excuse for 7 days. It just so happens that this was the begining of the month when billing is due. So I was called and asked about the billing and that it needed to be turned in, so what I did was went to work and turned in the billing and gave my employer a copy of the doctors excuse and stated that i needed to use my computer to e-mail the billing sheet over to the program director. So i did, and before i left i informed the secretary that i would be leaving and if she could give the hard copies to the Director, and the doctors note, and that i would be leaving since i had my doctors excuse. She said fine, called my director she was in a meeting. So I left, 3 days later I was fired for leaving work without notification. I tried getting unemployment, no dice, and now I have heard that I may have been black listed from the company, and I believe it is true, I have not been able to get a job for over 5 months. Be careful who you work for!!!!!!

New supervisor chose someone else to support him
Executive Secretary or Administrative Assistant - (City withheld for privacy), California, United States
I was originally hired by a female supervisor, whom I had a great business relationship with. Five months later she was promoted to a new position that (at the time) didn't offer an assistant position. She was replaced by a younger, more naive male supervisor; he had been with the company for 6 years. He seemed to be pleased with my support; however just weeks prior to my permanent placement - he did not support me. He stated several false reasons (with no merit) and dismissed me. Prologue: He brought in an older lady (co-worker)who he greatly admired to cover his office. ADVICE: Report to work, do your job and (no more) - then leave when your shift ends...

Reason for termination
Business Manager, Medical Office - (City withheld for privacy), Pennsylvania, United States
Shortly after 90 days and good review of my performance, a new Director was hired. From that time on, things changed quickly for me and was criticized for all that I did and had my manager pass the message's. Now I was not fulfilled and I could not meet their expectations. I felt left to dig myself a hole. After a meeting to fix things, which I requested. Instead of reaching an understanding and start fresh, I was written up and given 30 days to clean up my act. 30 days came. I was told, yes you have improved however we are still letting you go, you are not a fit.
