With this data, abstractors determine whether risks are present and the operations are appropriate. This is particularly important in the healthcare industry, in which abstractors gather data related to certain treatments and medicines to determine if patient care is appropriate for particular diseases, as well as whether particular treatments were effective. A real estate abstractor, meanwhile, will search public records in order to examine land titles and other legal papers to determine ownership and make sure there are no legal problems with transactions.
Abstractors must be familiar with all terminology within their field; medical abstractors must be familiar with medical coding, while real estate abstractors should be familiar with legal documents. Strong computer skills are required in order to generate analytics and create reports and databases, and strong writing skills are important to generate summaries and reports. Some positions may only require a high school diploma, while others require some college schooling. Some positions may require certification as an abstractor, while others will provide training to obtain this certification.
