Activities directors generally have the goal of upholding their residents’ standard of living and rehabilitate them, if necessary, to improve it; this may involve overseeing exercise activities which will aid their physical and mental well-being. These directors may be expected to teach classes and transport residents to activities and events which are outside of the facility. They may also coordinate special events, which involves working with outside vendors and service providers. Occasionally, they must work within budgets, so it is important to create activity plans which are effective, but affordable. Some activities directors may be expected to reside within the facility.
Strong communication skills are important in order to communicate well with residents, other staff, and outside parties, and candidates for this position should be highly compassionate and enjoy working with others. Some prior experience working with seniors, such as in at-home care or in a nursing home, may be required by some employers.
