Staff sergeants' overall duty is to lead squads and companies of men and women. They serve as advisors on technical matters. They have extraordinary technical abilities and leadership qualities. They must be effective communicators and motivators and have high levels of energy and confidence. On the battlefield, they must have proven to be able to command groups of 9 or 10 soldiers at a minimum. Staff sergeants are responsible for their subordinates and the effective accomplishment of assigned tasks. In addition to military school, which is required of all Airmen, staff sergeants must complete rigorous training programs. They get promoted to the position through years of dedicated service to the military, either exhibiting a talent for leading people or a record of proficiency in the battlefield.
Air Force staff sergeants work at the site where they are deployed. Their working environment can therefore vary greatly, depending on their current assignment. They live in the officer's quarters. During active duty, they can be deployed directly on the battlefield and are expected to lead their company of Airmen.
