Learn as many analytical techniques as you can; specialize in a couple; learn how to draw conclusions from data of different techniques together.

Work in a place that treats employees well, and also holds you accountable for progress. If you work someplace with a negative atmosphere, get out. It may be tempting to try and change it, but if the managers are negative it will never change.
Smaller companies can get stagnant. Shoot for jobs with large companies at the start of your career, they probably will do a better job of training you, and the pay is better. Then, later on in your career you can better deal with, and be of value to, smaller companies that can use your knowledge of solid business practices to experience their own success.
