Anesthesiologists and their assistants administer anesthetic drugs, blood, and other needed items, sometimes through spinal or intravenous methods. Prior to such procedures, these assistants may obtain patients' medical histories or conduct basic physical exams. They may also double-check that patients have received proper examinations or document procedures and their outcomes, so strong record-keeping skills are essential. Current CPR certification and the ability to maintain airways may be required by employers.
Before, during, and after procedures, it is important that anesthesiologist assistants keep the area and equipment clean and sterilized. After procedures are carried out, they may also have a role in helping patients remain calm and free from pain.
