Architectural draftsmen are responsible for creating architectural construction documents and drawings for their projects. They develop construction-related files that effectively encompass of aspects of the design process. They also conduct inspections that are required for quality assurance. Architectural draftsmen review and analyze specifications and propose other project-related ideas. In addition to these tasks, architectural draftsmen create estimates for materials, revise constructions plans, and make modifications based on the project needs and company resources. They also provide improvement recommendations for current building procedures.
Architectural draftsmen should possess strong interpersonal skills to communicate their progress to the architect in charge of their project. They also need to be familiar with building code requirements and process permit applications with the relevant authorities. Architectural draftsmen work outdoors when developing and measuring constructions specifications; however, they may also work in an office setting to create designs either by hand or on a personal computer using industrial architectural software.
These professionals must pay strong attention to detail and have advanced technical knowledge. They need to be creative individuals that propose innovative solutions to design- and construction-related problems. Additionally, they should work well with other draftsmen, but also be able to work effectively on their own with minimal supervision.
A bachelor's degree in architecture, construction management, or related field is required for position. Creative certifications and previous experience in a similar position are a plus. Architectural draftsmen also need to be proficient with Excel spreadsheet applications. Additional working knowledge of design programs such as 3D modeling software and Adobe suite applications are also important.
Architectural Draftsman Tasks
Log work orders into database and distribute and file work order folders daily.
Coordinate work order process with construction supervisors, engineers and property accounting.
Prepare layouts, drawings and designs according to engineering specifications using software.
Accurately post closed work orders to the master design files.
Review engineering drawings and supporting documentation to verify adherence to standard practices.
