An architectural and civil drafter is a person who creates drawings for construction purposes, usually using computer software. As a civil drafter, these drawings typically will incorporate and detail the various terrain and topography of the building site. Then the architectural and civil drafter will usually show how the overall structure can integrate with the surrounding environment, helping to provide a good working overview for construction and design engineers.
A person working in this field will typically need to be very fluent with computers and computer-assisted drawing (CAD) software. The drafter will also need to be somewhat fluent in being able to read and understand survey documentation and topographic maps. The drafter helps to create fairly detailed representations of construction projects that incorporate the environment, as well as landscaping architecture. These drawings may even provide multiple angles and images of the same section of the structure to provide good working schematics for construction engineers who will use them as a working reference.
Architectural and civil drafters must possess an excellent skill for noticing details, as much of the work can involve noting terrain anomalies and elevations or depressions within the scope of the drawings. An exacting nature and patience are also key attributes for persons in this profession. Most architectural and civil drafters will seek pertinent education from technical or vocational schools after high school, although some universities also offer four-year degrees in drafting. Drafters will typically work on smaller projects as part of a team before being able to be considered for major civil structures and construction projects. Drafters work regular hours of the work week in an office environment, but field work is also frequently an expectation of the job.
