The retail area manager oversees and directs other employees, typically in one section or department of the retail store. This professional handles a number of managerial responsibilities, such as directing workers to perform tasks, assigning individuals to specific areas of the retail space, training new hires, holding interviews for prospective workers, and providing feedback and help for employees as needed. The retail area manager is also responsible for ensuring work in their area of responsibility is completed efficiently, as well as implementing new procedures or methods to increase productivity. They generally reports to the store manager, although they may report to the general manager on occasion (such as a biweekly or monthly basis) to report on how the store is doing, improvements being made, and suggestions for future growth.
