Area sales representatives for packaging products are tasked with selling packaging products within defined geographic areas. These representatives are present throughout the sales cycle, from reaching out to clients to fulfilling orders, and they must also research and follow leads.
There may be sales goals and time-constraints to be met in this position, and commission is usually offered based on sales made. These representatives must develop and maintain sales relationships, and formal sales presentations may be created for larger clients. Some may be responsible for creating written sales plans and sales reports, and they must be highly knowledgeable of the company's packaging products to determine the best choices for clients and occasionally train them in how to use products.
Computer skills, communication skills, and customer service skills are essential in this position, and these sales representatives must also be able to multitask to prioritize work and meet deadlines. Much of the work is done independently, though they may occasionally work with other representatives, structural designers, and the company's marketing department. Some positions require prior sales experience while others offer on-the-job training, and some employers may prefer those who have a bachelor's degree.
