The position of area store manager requires an ability to work with people, including customers and employees. In addition to being able to relate to customers and to supervise, hire, and schedule store employees, they also need to be skilled in general store management. This management includes maximizing profits; managing accounts, sales goals, and store layout; and organizing promotions and markdowns.Read More...
Knowledge and proficiency in customer service is also required in order to promote direct sales and to set a positive example for other store employees under their supervision. Area store managers should also have knowledge of effective training tools in order to ensure that each new employee is well- schooled and informed of their job requirements and store policies. Good communication skills are a necessity, as well as the ability to positively supervise employees and to be able to delegate assignments in such a way that benefits the store's sales goals. At the same time, they need to keep employees working productively, consistently, and in a cooperative manner. The ability to intercede in conflicts that occasionally arise between employees and to resolve these conflicts in a beneficial and productive manner is also necessary. Retail sales can at times be highly stressful, and store managers need to present a calm and courteous demeanor. This will ensure the integrity of the store's customer service policies and set an example for other staff members who also work directly with the customers.
