Artistic directors generally work with theaters, but are also hired by other organizations. The ideal applicant should have a Bachelor's degree in a theatrical discipline and previous experience in the field. Work is primarily carried out indoors, although occasional outdoors activity is possible. It is important that the artistic director can communicate well with co-workers, as they will be supervising a group of employees and actors/models for various roles. He/she will often be the face of their organization to the media and community, as they will be working with other directors to plan and produce plays and other scenes as needed.
The artistic director may or may not be in charge of the budget, but will need to propose an operating budget and ensure that operations stay within budget limits. They will also need to present reviews and documentation at board meetings to executives and work with other departments to create marketing materials to present to the public. The artistic director will also be in charge of rehearsals and practices, coordinating technical trials with the appropriate staff, leading staff meetings, and giving directions as needed.
