Those in this position generally act as an intermediary between management and the artists and designers employed by the company. Assistant art directors have daily interactions with the creative team while performing mid-level managerial duties. He/she often responds to requests for projects made by the art director, and helps the director determine what is required and how individual projects should be handled. Offering suggestions and helping to fine-tune ideas is a critical part of the position.
Assistant art directors often act in a clerical capacity, as well, by keeping track of all of submitted work, filling out forms, filing reports, and generating reports. They often interact with clients directly to determine their needs, and also create mock-ups and other samples specifically for those clients. They will often compile and present completed design presentations for clients and/or management, as well.
Another major part of the job involves providing quality control for projects to ensure that the company and/or clients receive the designs/products which best suit the needs of their organization. A bachelor's degree in fine arts or a related field, as well as several years of experience, are generally required for this position.
