Job Description for Assistant City Attorney

An assistant city attorney is a lawyer who prosecutes cases in local court, typically assisting the main city attorney or prosecutor. They are generally responsible for trying smaller cases and/or handling regular traffic or misdemeanor dockets. The city or district attorney may use assistant city attorneys to assist on larger cases as well, with the assistant organizing evidence, scheduling and conducting interviews, and facilitating open communication between the prosecutor's office and any defense attorneys. Other tasks that may be performed by the assistant city attorney include ensuring subpoenas are served, ensuring witnesses are interviewed and participating in the jury selection process. If a particular area of a case falls within an assistant city attorney's specialization, he or she may present parts of the case or perform cross examinations as well.
