Assistant city managers may provide supervision for large projects, studies, and research, and serve as a representative for the city manager to the public. They are also involved in the development and implementation of city policies and procedures. They may prepare annual budget and audits, and also provide information to city managers regarding policies and decision-making, as well as a weekly activity report. These assistants are also tasked with addressing and resolving citizens' complaints and may assume the city manager's role in case of absence. They usually attend all city council meetings and must maintain a positive relationship with the public, as well as with staff and other city council members.
Strong clerical and filing skills are important in this position, and computer skills and a basic understanding of office machinery are also necessary. Travel is occasionally required, and aspiring assistant city managers should have a valid driver's license, a bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, and at least five years of experience in local government.
