Assistant construction superintendents work for construction companies to provide on-site supervision and work under the direction of the superintendent, who leads the efforts of both regular employees and subcontractors. It's important to make sure that construction is always carried out in a safe and efficient manner, and they must also ensure quality work within certain deadlines and time-constraints.
Records of the work carried out and any safety issues should be kept in an organized manner, as the superintendent may be given a budget to be met. Prior to a job being carried out, the assistant superintendent may be responsible for creating cost analyses and feasibility studies, and while jobs are in progress, reports regarding things such as quality of output and progress must be created.
Some of the work, such as record-keeping, report-writing, analyses, and communication efforts may be done in an office, so computer skills are necessary in this position, though much of the work is done outside while supervising construction progress and they may occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable weather, such as extreme heat. Some assistant construction superintendents may also be expected to carry out some construction duties personally. Years of prior work and leadership experience are generally required for this position, and strong customer service skills are also important to work directly with clients and possibly play a role in securing jobs.
