An assistant pastry chef generally works under a pastry chef in order to create items for a bakery. The position may involve working on a team with multiple assistant pastry chefs. Some of the items that may be made are pastries, cakes, cookies, bread, muffins, and cupcakes. Generally, there are recipes that need to be carried out, and the assistant pastry chef should be able to measure, mix, and bake these items based on recipes.
The assistant pastry chef will usually also be in charge of decorating these items. Therefore, being able to create aesthetic designs through the use of frosting and other baking items is also essential. An assistant pastry chef may also be expected to come up with new recipes that will create sales at the bakery. The assistant may take baking requests from customers and turn their vision into a reality. Another duty that an assistant pastry chef may carry out is keeping track of inventory and ordering replacements when the supply is low. It is also important to be able to carry out all duties in a safe and sanitary manner. The position may also involve working directly with customers. Therefore, strong customer service skills will also come in handy.
Minimum physical requirements may be given for this job as the position requires lifting, bending, standing, and walking for a majority of the day. Some positions may require some culinary schooling or a finished technical degree related to the field.
Assistant Pastry Chef Tasks
Prepare pastries, handling pastry presentation and plating/food displays.
Assist in developing menu, pastries, designs, and presentations.
Provide support for all pastry stations and perform duties in employee’s absence.
Ensure compliance of safety and sanitation regulations and check quality of food products.
