Assistant Professor, Postsecondary / Higher Education Advice

What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?
Assistant Professor, Postsecondary / Higher Education in Kolkata:
"Be Happy, Enjoy Life."
My advice to students is to find out a name of a single person who has become famous by studying only. It is really scant. Better bunk classes and utilize time in better matter. Only a month before finals read 20 hours a day and pass the exam.
Assistant Professor, Postsecondary / Higher Education in New Rochelle:
Do lots of research and publishing. There is no such thing as too much research or too many academic publications in this world. Better opportunities come with the more serious publications and the broader exposure in your field. This often includes substantially increased salaries and better resources/support by your current or (more likely) new employing institution. Today, a lack of ongoing research and a small publication history actually hurts your career opportunities in the academic world. Also, try to find several faculty members within and outside of your institution to co-author with on academic publications. It'll raise your profile to prospective employers and non-academic opportunities (such as consulting or speaking engagements).
