While the associate director of a non-profit organization (NPO) may pursue a different ultimate goal to associate directors of for-profit organizations, their role and duties are similar. They are responsible for overseeing the different departments of a business. They must possess good leadership and organization skills.
Associate directors of NPOs manage different teams of people throughout the different departments of a business. These departments may include finance, operations, human resources, and more. They work with and report to an executive director in planning business activities and making sure that everything is running properly. Their typical work environment is in an office, and they usually spend some time in a conference room. Their work hours are usually Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tools used while working include a computer, telephone, pen and paper, and other typical office supplies. As leaders of multiple departments, associate directors of NPOs must be versatile in their ability to function in many capacities. They must be able to lead, be good with numbers, work well with groups of people, and have an understanding of how every piece of a business works individually and how they all fit together. They function the same as other associate directors, except that the primary goal of their company is not profit. They often work in charity organizations such as The Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.
Requirements for this position are a minimum of a bachelor's degree, usually in business management, though related fields may be acceptable. Associate directors of an NPO must also have multiple years in one of the related areas, such as finance or human resources, as well as previous leadership roles. It is also preferred that their experience be in the non-profit sector.
