The associate director of development conducts a wide variety of duties related to fundraising and donor relations for their organization. Specifics duties vary with the needs of each company or organization, but the associate director of development's general responsibilities include supervising staff that are responsible for fundraising and donor activities, working closely with the supervising director to develop strategies and techniques, and working with other departments to ensure proper coordination with varying clients and needs. Associate directors of development generally work full time in an office environment, although they often work outside of their office. For example, they may represent the company at events, conduct meetings with donors, and help organize media events. Overtime may be required for associate directors of development depending on when events occur and how much travel is required.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is generally needed for this position, although a master's degree is often preferred. Experience in a development-related position is generally needed as well, and previous managerial experience may be preferred or required. Accreditation as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CRFE) is also required for some positions and may require coursework. Other needed skills include the ability to use basic computer software such as the Microsoft Office suite, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to carefully monitor and review team performance.
