Strong presentation skills are important in order to present design presentations. Keeping up to date with new and popular fashion trends is important. Strong research skills are important to obtain knowledge about trending colors, concepts, and materials. Research may be done online, via consumer surveys, or by reading magazines and keeping an eye on the competition. Some travel may be required in order to research trends, attend trade shows, and purchase materials. The associate fashion designer should be able to create handmade fashion sketches. In some positions, computer designs may also be necessary. Sometimes, the fashion designer may also be responsible for making prototypes come to realization, so skills such as sewing will come in handy.
Many positions require a bachelor’s degree in fashion. Though some of the work is done on a team, it is also important to be able to work on tasks independently and to be able to adhere to time constraints.
