An auto glass technician is the person who is responsible for installing and repairing automotive glass. This is a position that can typically be found at an auto body repair shop, and it is both physically and mentally demanding. An auto glass technician will work with a team of other automotive repair technicians in order to restore the overall condition of a vehicle. The level of formal education for this position is dependent on each employer. Many will recommend certification through the national institute for automotive service excellence or auto glass safety council. Continuing education classes may also be necessary, and some employers will provide education and training on the job.
An auto glass technician will be primarily responsible for removing a damaged windshield or auto window glass. After removal, they will apply a compound along the edges of the new piece of auto glass, fit it into the vehicle using rubber strips to hold the window in place, and weatherproof it. Some auto glass technicians may also weatherproof undamaged windshields in vehicles. This position requires a person who is highly attentive to detail and has the physical strength and dexterity required to work with large pieces of auto glass. Customer service skills and time management skills are also imperative for this position.

- Verify and check parts before beginning repair.
- Install replacement glass in vehicles after removing damaged parts
- Prepare installation by marking outlines or patterns and cutting glass.
- Prepare and prime vehicle by removing debris from glass and window edges
- Inspect work to ensure the vehicle is delivered with a fit and finish equal or superior to the original factory fit and finish.
