Job Description for Avionics Engineer

Avionics engineers are employed primarily by companies which work with aircraft and aviation. Employers generally search for applicants who have Bachelor's degrees, generally in Aeronautics, Aviation Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Some require as many as five years of experience, but others will accept a combination of education and experience, and some organizations accept experience and training without higher education. Training and certification provided by the Federal Aviation Administration should be obtained by all aspiring avionics engineers. The job will mostly take place in/around aircraft hangars and other areas where aircraft are stored. Those in this position should have an exceptional understanding of computers, and may need to know some basic programming for certain software components. However, they will generally be tasked with installing and maintaining various components of an aircraft, such as navigation systems, autopilot, entertainment, and communications array. They may also help develop and design new components, such as computer-related parts or other systems to be installed.
