Job Description for Cabinetmaker, Bench Carpenter

Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters generally work with wood products to create items of use such as tables, chairs, and benches. They measure and cut different types of wood (typically using woodworking machines such as power saws and jointers), as well as assemble and finish products. They must incorporate factors such as the quality of the wood, knots, and the intricacy of designs into their work, which may include pricing. Increasingly, computer software is used in cabinetmakers' and bench carpenters' work, and so skills in related design and manufacturing software may be preferred or required in this trade. These professionals must also know how to work with nails, glue, dowels, clamps, and other tools needed to assemble completed wood products. Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters must also be skilled in sanding, staining, and other methods necessary to finish wood.
