Job Description for Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant
Cardiothoracic physician assistants work alongside cardiothoracic doctors and focus on patient contact and care. Responsibilities include caring for patients before, during, and after surgical procedures and may also develop and institute a treatment plan, formulate a diagnosis, order and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and monitor the plan's success. Prior to any procedures, the assistant must explain them to patients and answer any questions they may have, and these assistants also perform routine pre-operative tests necessary for surgery.Read More...
During surgery, assistants will support the cardiothoracic surgeon in a number of ways. They may insert chest tubes, drain fluid from the lungs, and put intravenous lines in arteries and veins to draw blood or administer medication. They should also be knowledgeable in areas such as robot-assisted surgery, ventricular assist devices, cardiac valve replacement, trans-catheter aortic valve replacements, lobectomies, and more.
After surgery, cardiothoracic physician assistants participate in rounds with doctors and nurses to discuss care plans and act on any problems which need to be addressed. They also perform patient exams, monitor post-surgical recovery, and order any necessary follow-up lab tests. They also work with patients for discharge by explaining care instructions and prescribing medications for home use during recovery. Cardiothoracic physician assistants should be able to work independently and must have excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, and stamina and steady hands are necessary for long surgical procedures. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program is required for this position.
