A chemical technician works at a facility such as a plant that processes or deals with chemicals. Some examples of places that employ chemical technicians are water purification plants and waste treatment centers. The chemical technician may deal with chemicals that keep the facility’s equipment working correctly or that are used to treat the product the facility deals with. The technician should make sure that chemicals are treated and disposed of in line with laws and company policy. The technician will work with the compliance department to make sure all work is done according to health, environmental, and safety regulations.
One part of the job is conducting sampling and testing to make sure that the chemicals are balanced correctly. The technician will also carry out testing and calibration of certain equipment within the facility to make sure it is processing correctly. When the machines are not functioning well, the technician should be able to carry out troubleshooting to determine the solution. There may be exposure to toxic fumes and other dangers in this job. Inventory of chemicals must be taken by the technician, and they should be restocked when low. These chemicals should be stored correctly in order to prevent accidents from occurring.
Some positions will require a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, while others will need a minimum of a high school diploma. Much of the work is done independently, so the ability to be self-motivated is important. However, some tasks require working on a team, so strong communication skills are also important.
