Chief program officers must keep up with trends in the field to shape enticing programs for clients and must ensure that all programs adhere to applicable laws and regulations and the mission of the organization. Because this is a leadership position, they may manage the work of several employees who are involved in carrying out programs, and some may be responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating these employees, as well as creating and delegating tasks. Multiple teams and leaders may be supervised at once, and these officers also create and manage program budgets, obtain funding, and search for new funding sources.
Multitasking skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are important in this position, and chief program officers must also be able to work well under pressure and when overseeing several programs at once. A bachelor's degree and years of experience in the field are often minimum requirements for this position, and some employers may require a master's degree.
