What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

"Understanding over all Vision and Needs."
When I have been successful it is when I understand the needs and perspective from each of our departments. As I have done this it helps me in making decisions on product development and priorities. It also helps me understand the needs when consulting other departments on the use of technology.

"Computers Are A Means, Not An End."
It is easy to get caught up in the details of new technologies, but a good CTO is always mindful of how it advances the objectives of the business. Never allow the technology to dictate company objectives; rather, company objectives need to dictate the technology.
