Child care assistants provide oversight to children staying in a child care facility. They assist the primary child care teacher, helping promote the curriculum and work directly with children. Each day, these assistants may work individually with specific children or help the group as a whole (depending on the needs of the classroom). They report to the primary childcare teacher and are responsible for adhering to the local, state, and federal laws governing childcare. Typically, a child care assistant works in an indoor classroom environment, although there are often some outdoor activities. The specific duties required on a day-to-day basis vary by employer, size of the class, and different needs of the children. Generally, the child care assistant must help create an environment that promotes healthy growth and leads to positive development.
