Civil engineering assistants work with land surveys, public works systems, and land development, and assist in developing plans for a wide range of projects. These assistants work with professional and licensed engineers to help implement new systems within the community or for private industry, and they're also tasked with preparing cost estimations, assisting in field investigations, and preparing and finalizing project plans.
Candidates for this position should have working knowledge of computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs and general office software. Preparing and delivering reports is an important part of the job, and prior experience in preparing statistical and analytical data in charts, graphs, and reports is highly beneficial.
Civil engineering assistants should have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work well with upper management and other members of the engineering team, and they must be able to troubleshoot problems and find new and innovative ways to help increase efficiency and safety. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field and relevant experience are generally required for this position, and certifications are highly beneficial and may be required by some employers.
